100 year old Jean Monnet Archives discovered

Posted on 08 March 2018

The  Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe has found two linear meters of Jean  Monnet’s archives, which were previously presumed missing.

The documents, which are dated 1916-1922, were recently discovered by Foundation archivists and shed light on an unknown part of Jean Monnet’s life. Little knowledge exists about this time in his life, as he destroyed the majority of his documents in 1940 when the German army approached, according to his memoirs.

These archives will give insight into his activities during the First World War and the immediate postwar period, including his role in setting up one of the first systems of international cooperation.

The priority for the Foundation now is to classify, describe and digitalize these documents in order to get them ready for historians and anyone interested in doing research on this subject.
